Roland V. Hueston III died attempting to save a man from being struck by a subway train, New York, New York, January 1, 2022. Around 2:40 a.m., the man, 38, lay on a subway track with a broken arm as an oncoming train was moving through a tunnel into the Fordham Road station. Earlier, several teenagers assaulted the man on the subway platform, about 3.5 feet above the track, in the vicinity of Hueston, 36, who worked as a building security officer. Hueston, who had approached the attack, moved from the platform onto the track. Soon, the eight-car train arrived in the station, with Hueston closer than the man to the train’s lead car. Although a train operator saw Hueston waving his arms on the track and applied the emergency brake to slow the train, it continued advancing toward Hueston, who then unsuccessfully tried to climb back onto the platform. The train struck Hueston and continued moving until it stopped just short of striking the injured man. Only five train cars were fully in the station by the time the train stopped. The man, who also suffered injuries to his face and torso, was treated at a hospital. Hueston was pronounced dead at the scene.
