Morris A. Neeley attempted to save Anthony W. Lamb from suffocation, Winona, Texas, May 29, 1985. Lamb, 24, was rendered unconscious while working in a sewer. Neeley, 49, police chief, was alerted and went to the scene. He entered the sewer’s manhole and descended on a ladder that extended to the bottom of the shaft in which Lamb lay. Pulling Lamb’s head from effluent in the bottom of the shaft, Neeley also lost consciousness and fell from the ladder. A teenager then descended to save Lamb and Neeley, and he too was rendered unconscious. A chemical company laborer who had arrived tied a rope around his chest; as his foreman at ground level held the other end of the rope, the laborer descended the shaft, tied another rope around Neeley, and returned to the surface, where he and the foreman pulled Neeley from the shaft. In a similar manner, the laborer and his foreman removed the teenager and then Lamb. Neeley and the teenager recovered after hospitalization, but Lamb died. 60419-7020
