Irvin P. Holmes, 28, baggage master, saved R. Darnell Pickle, 9, from being killed by a train, Tyler, Texas, February 6, 1921. Darnell, walking on a switch track, failed to hear the approach of two or three cars which had been shunted onto the track behind him. No person was on the cars, which were running at a speed of about 10 m.p.h. Holmes ran 45 feet to Darnell and without stopping put both arms around him and lifted him as he continued running across the track. He just cleared the front car, he and Darnell escaping injury. 21217-1820
