Woodrow W. Farrar saved Tessa H. Gibson from suffocation, Houlton, Maine, February 20, 1968. In a two-story brick building fire broke out at the front end of the second floor, where apartments were occupied by Farrar, 54, assistant store manager; Mrs. Gibson, 82, and a man and his wife. When Farrar opened his door he found the hall filled with dense smoke from flames on the walls and ceilings. He dashed across the hal1, passing under flames and sustaining some burns, and ran along another hall leading to the rear of the building, where Mrs. Gibson’s apartment was located. Farrar knew that Mrs. Gibson had difficulty walking. An explosion occurred, and all lights went out. With flames spreading on the ceiling above him, Farrar continued toward Mrs. Gibson’s apartment. He called to her, and she moved into the foyer of her apartment as smoke entered through an open transom. Reaching the apartment, Farrar opened the door and found Mrs. Gibson just inside. He pulled her into the hall and to a nearby door which led outside. Farrar took Mrs. Gibson through the outside door onto a sun deck, where the man and his wife had climbed out a window. Police arrived and removed all four persons. A second explosion collapsed the roof at the front end of the building. Mrs. Gibson was hospitalized for smoke inhalation and Farrar for burns. Both recovered. 50074-5467
