Windfall G. Haines, 33, salesman, saved Frank E., Jr., 8, and Gertrude Hill, 52, from drowning, Daytona Beach, Florida, November 8, 1926. While swimming in the Atlantic Ocean, Frank was carried into deeper water by an undertow. His mother waded to aid him, but she too was affected by the undertow. Haines, fully clothed, waded 215 feet from shore and then swam 35 feet to Mrs. Hill and Frank, took hold of them, and tried to swim toward shore, but the three were carried 50 feet farther out. After Haines had supported Frank and Mrs. Hill for five minutes, lifeguards reached them and took them to shore. Frank and Mrs. Hill were unconscious but were revived. 26816-2240
