Willis D. McAfee, 32, foreman of linemen, rescued John B. Smith, 29, lineman, from a fatal fall, Clearwater, Florida, November 4, 1927. Smith ascended a pole to a point 24 feet above a paved street and was shocked into unconsciousness as he reached to take hold of a cross arm on which were high-tension wires. McAfee ran 40 feet toward the pole, and five feet from it he saw Smith start to fall head first. He thrust his arms upward and caught Smith, whose head struck McAfee’s face. McAfee with his arms around Smith was thrown backward on the roadway, but he had broken Smith’s fall. McAfee was unconscious, and both sustained serious injuries, from which they recovered.
