Willie Lee Grisby, 14, schoolboy, died after saving Charles E. McCloud, 10, schoolboy, from drowning, Dallas, Texas, June 2, 1958. When Charles, a poor swimmer, entered a small lake to swim and found himself in water beyond his depth, he became frightened and called for help as he struggled to remain at the surface in water 11 feet deep seven feet from the bank. Although he himself was a poor swimmer, Willie removed his shoes and jumped into the water beside Charles. He attempted to support Charles, who struggled and grasped him around the waist. With difficulty Willie aided Charles two feet toward the bank. Charles continued to struggle and, breaking free from Willie, swam to wadable water. Willie, still in water 11 feet deep, submerged twice as he struggled to stay afloat, making no attempt to take hold of a fishing pole extended toward him from the bank by a girl. He then submerged a third time and did not return to the surface. Police were summoned and by diving located Willie. He could not be revived.
