William Thomas Morris saved B. Alton Cowan from being killed by a train, Decherd, Tennessee, August 8, 1919. Alton, 9, fell from a station platform onto a track on which a passenger train was approaching at a speed of 40 m.p.h. He lay across one rail of the track, and Morris, 59, well digger, stepped to the edge of the platform, put one foot between the rail and the platform, and grasped Alton with both hands when the train was 150 feet from them. He then sprang backward with Alton, barely clearing the locomotive, which did not stop. Neither Morris nor Alton was injured. 19946-1664
