William T. Knight died attempting to save Opal V. Woods from drowning, Delhi, Oklahoma, August 23, 1925. While wading in a swimming pool, Opal, 17, stepped into deep water and went under the surface. She rose and called for help. Knight, 42, station agent, who was clothed, remarked that he could not swim but would try, and he waded 35 feet from the bank toward Opal and then stepped into water over his depth. His momentum carried him to within five feet of Opal, who was then 15 feet from wadable water. He struggled helplessly and drowned while a good swimmer, who had arrived, swam to Opal and took her to the bank. 25593-2025
