William McSweeney, 36, bartender, died attempting to save Charlotte J. O’Brien, 28, from drowning, Utica, New York, November 4,1911. McSweeney dived and swam about 70 feet toward Mrs. O’Brien, who, unable to swim, was drifting downstream in the Erie Canal, at night, in water eight feet deep. When within six feet of Mrs. O’Brien, McSweeney sank beneath the surface and drowned. Mrs. O’Brien was rescued by men who extended a pole to her. 7475-566
