William M. Martini, 27, winery superintendent, died attempting to save John C. Nelson and Everett Stafford, Jr., 62 and 34, respectively, laborers, from suffocation, Forestville, California, October 3, 1968. At a winery, Nelson and Stafford were overcome due to a deficiency of oxygen in a fermenting tank which was being cleaned. Martini was attracted and ran to the tank where Nelson and Stafford lay unconscious. Shouting, Martini jumped down into the tank, which was seven feet deep. Others arrived and saw Martini also lying prone on the bottom of the tank. Workmen donned masks and removed Martini, Stafford, and Nelson. They could not be revived.
