William M. Galvez, 33, laborer, saved Edward V. Borquez, Jr., 9, schoolboy, and attempted to save Inez R. Villa, 1, from being struck by an automobile, Tucson, Arizona, Septemher 9, 1955. Edward pushed a stroller, in which Inez was seated, along a gravel walk at one side of an unpaved street, where two automobiles were approaching abreast at high speed. Galvez started to cross from the opposite side of the street as the two vehicles, then 150 feet away, locked bumpers and veered toward the children. Galvez ran 25 feet and reached the children when the two automobiles were 40 feet away. The bumpers suddenly became disengaged, and one vehicle plunged into a nearby fence while the second automobile continued toward Galvez and the children at 30 .m.p.h. Galvez jerked Edward from the automobile’s path and then lifted Inez from the stroller. The automobile struck Galvez, causing him to drop Inez. Galvez was dragged 28 feet and hurled against a nearby dwelling before the automobile was stopped. Edward was only scratched, but Inez suffered fractures of both legs and other injuries, from which she recovered. Galvez suffered fractures of his legs and nose, as well as other injuries, but recovered sufficiently to resume limited work seven months later. 43633-4058
