William L. Kite attempted to save Mead Wilkinson from drowning, Barrington, Rhode Island, September 1, 1924. Wilkinson, 57, janitor, found the current too strong for him while swimming in the Barrington River, and after sinking momentarily, he became alarmed and called for help. William, 14, student, who weighed much less than Wilkinson, swam 20 feet from a moored raft to Wilkinson and took hold of his bathing suit at the back of the neck and started to swim with him. Wilkinson then grabbed William, and they bobbed up and down. William called to an older brother, who was on a bridge nearby, for help, and the latter swam to them, reaching them just as Wilkinson released his hold on William. William’s brother then towed them to the bridge. Wilkinson was almost unconscious but was revived. William suffered only from weakness. 24615-1970
