William K. Inman, 49, personnel director, died attempting to save Carolyn Herring, 15, from drowning, Chattanooga, Tennessee, July 16, 1966. While swimming in Lake Chickamauga near Inman’s houseboat 1,000 feet from an island in the lake, Miss Herring got into difficulty in deep water, began flailing wildly, and called for help. Inman tried to start the engine of the houseboat but could not do so. He told his wife that he was going to get Miss Herring. Placing a coil of rope over his arm, Inman dived into the water. He swam 50 feet to Miss Herring, who was thrashing her arms. Inman’s wife threw some life preservers into the water, but they were carried out of reach by the wind. Inman faced Miss Herring and placed his arms around her. There was a struggle, and both sank beneath the surface and did not reappear. Their bodies later were recovered
