William J. Milburn, 14, schoolboy, saved Rudolph E. Wildermuth, 19, telephone repeater, from drowning, Point Pleasant, New Jersey, July 14, 1923. Wildermuth, who could not swim, suddenly stepped into deep water while bathing in the Manasquan River, and he called for help as he drifted 50 feet from the bank in a strong current. William waded on an angle 20 feet from the bank and swam 55 feet to Wildermuth. He took hold of Wildermuth’s shirt, and Wildermuth put his hand on William’s shoulder for support. William freed himself and again grasped Wildermuth, who had become unconscious. Pushing and pulling Wildermuth with great effort, he swam 50 feet to wadable water near a sandbar in midstream. William received aid in taking Wildermuth to the bank, and Wildermuth was revived. 23447-1914
