William Harrill Conner died attempting to save Martha J. Pritchard from drowning, Rutherfordton, North Carolina, September 2, 1973. When she stepped into a deep hole in the Broad River, Martha, 14, floundered and screamed for help. Conner, 25, textile mill laborer, dived into the water and swam to Martha, who grasped him with both arms. A struggle ensued, during which both persons were submerged briefly at times. Martha and Conner then went under together and did not reappear. Both drowned.
