William H. McKiernan died saving Robert O. Anderson from suffocation, Kimberly, Missouri, July 18, 1919. Anderson, 46, carpenter, was overcome by gas while working in a coal mine shaft, 30 feet deep, after a blast had been set off in the shaft. McKiernan, 60, mine operator, descended cross timbers to the bottom, telling a man at the top to throw down a rope. He tied the rope around Anderson, and Anderson was drawn up and soon recovered. McKiernan was meanwhile overcome. He was taken out of the shaft an hour later after a man, wearing a gas mask, had descended and put a rope on him, but he could not be revived. 22265-1782
