William F. Mann, 33, blacksmith, saved J. Luke Erne, 23, well?digger, from suffocation, Lynchburg, Virginia, June 22, 1910. Mann ran to a well and, seeing others afraid to descend, slid down a rope to Erne, who lay overcome by gas at the bottom, 35 feet below the surface of the ground. He wrapped the rope around his left arm, grasped Erne with his right arm, fastened his teeth in Erne’s clothing, and was drawn to the surface with him. Erne was revived. 6594-595
