William F. Leland, 27, captain died attempting to save David Simpson, 25, deckhand, from drowning, McClellanville, South Carolina, May 24, 1911. Leland jumped from a riverboat into Jeryme Creek, and in water 15 feet deep swam 90 feet to Simpson, who had fallen overboard. Leland caught Simpson’s hands; Simpson’s head appeared above the surface of the water momentarily, and then both sank and were drowned. 6800-557
