William E. Paine rescued Walter L. Wilfong, Jr., from burning, Youngstown, Ohio, January 14, 1976. In a highway accident, Wilfong, 18, was trapped in the front seat of his automobile, on which fire broke out in the engine compartment and spread to the interior. Paine, 45, labor foreman, ran to the vehicle and tried in vain to open the door. Through a broken window, he then extended his upper torso into the automobile and took hold of Wilfong. With some difficulty, Paine pulled Wilfong out of the vehicle, which quickly filled with flames. Wilfong recovered from his injuries and burns.
