William Curtis Lentz helped to save Jack Speer from drowning, Dexter, Michigan, March 6, 1974. Speer, 24, was thrown from a canoe into deep water in the flood swollen Huron River and, 30 feet from the bank, managed to grasp the end of a projecting limb of a large tree but could not move along it because of the very strong current at his back. Among persons attracted was Lentz, 43, millwright. Lentz, following another man, entered the cold water and made his way along the limb. He reached Speer after the other man had done so but had lost his hold on the limb and been swept downstream to a point where he was able to get out of the water. Lentz, with difficulty, moved Speer nearer the bank. Other men who had formed a human chain then helped remove Speer from the water. 53831-6141
