William C. Moran, 16, salesman, attempted to save Eulalie Mercier, 3, and Evariste Vachon, 4, from drowning, Lunenburg, Massachusetts, March 2, 1915. Eulalie and Evariste broke through thin ice on a pond 35 feet from the bank, where the water was 15 feet deep. William, who could not swim, ran to a point on the ice 20 feet from the hole, crawled to the edge, and reached for Eulalie, who was about four feet from him. The ice then broke under William, and he dropped into the water. He made an unsuccessful attempt to climb upon the ice and then clung to the ice and called for help. The children sank and were drowned. A log was cast to William from the bank, and he clung to it. A man who had a rope tied to him then swam to the log, took hold of it, and was drawn with William to the bank. William was numb and suffered from shock and a cold, but he recovered in a week. 18520-1480
