William A. Johnson, 32, paperhanger, died attempting to save Thomas Duvall, 21, plumber, from drowning, Baltimore, Maryland, February 14, 1917. Duvall broke through the ice on Hampden Reservoir, 85 feet from the bank, where the water was 20 feet deep. The ice broke off when he tried to support himself by it, and he called for help. Johnson walked from the bank toward Duvall, but he broke through as he was reaching for Duvall, and he was unable to climb out. A rope was thrown toward Johnson from the bank but fell short of him. Duvall had already drowned, and Johnson sank and was drowned before the rope could be thrown again. 17781-1340
