Wilford William Lyons died attempting to save Willie Funchess from suffocation, Cocoa, Florida, February 22, 1979. While on a ladder in a sewer manhole containing hydrogen sulfide and methane, Funchess, 21, lost consciousness and fell to the bottom of the manhole. Lyons, 27, laborer, entered the manhole and tried to remove Funchess but also lost consciousness, as did two other workmen. Another man gave assistance, and rescue personnel who had arrived removed the four unconscious men. Two recovered, but Lyons and Funchess died.
