Walter P. Emmons saved Juan J. Reyes from drowning, Bridge City, Texas, October 4, 1969. Juan, 16, high-school student who could not swim, jumped from a boat into a bayou, unaware that the water was beyond his depth. He floundered and called for help. Although he was a poor swimmer and used a heart pacer for a cardiac condition, Emmons, 60, chief clerk, dived into the water and swam to where Juan was struggling to keep afloat in deep water about 30 feet from the bank. Supporting Juan at the surface with some difficulty, Emmons by kicking moved him to a point of safety in wadable water.
