Walter F. Liddle, 38, carpenter, died attempting to save John Salley, 9, from drowning, Buffalo, New York, January 19, 1929. While John was playing on floating cakes of ice on Cazenovia Park Lake, he fell into water eight feet deep 85 feet from the bank. Liddle, who was a poor swimmer and was heavily clothed, ran from the bank on broken ice toward John and sank into the water when he was 20 feet from him. A boy on a cake of ice grasped Liddle’s hand and pulled him partly out of the water. Both then fell into the water. The boy got out. Another boy on a cake of ice extended a stick to Liddle and pulled Liddle partly out of the water. The ice began to sink under the boy, and he jumped to other ice. Liddle sank and was drowned. John was rescued by another boy. 28944-2323
