Walter Edward Hess, 15, schoolboy, died attempting to save Robert M. Hannah, 10, from drowning, Rising Sun, Indiana, July 12, 1928. While Robert was wading in the Ohio River in water to his chest, he stepped into deeper water and drifted farther from the bank. Walter, who was almost fully clothed and who was a poor swimmer, waded about 20 feet and swam the same distance to Robert. Robert grasped him, and both were submerged several times in a struggle. A young man swam to them, but they grasped him, and he broke away and left them. Both Walter and Robert were drowned. 28401-2360
