Walt Dean King saved Gertrude M. Johnson from suffocation, San Jose, California, April 4, 1975. Fire broke out in an upstairs bedroom in a frame dwelling occupied by Mrs. Johnson, 57. Among those attracted to the scene was King, 26, auto assembly worker. He twice attempted to ascend to the second floor but was driven back by dense smoke. On the third try he succeeded in crawling to the top of the stairs. Probing in the smoke-filled hallway, he found Mrs. Johnson, who was lying unconscious on the floor. King dragged Mrs. Johnson down the stairs and out of the dwelling. She was revived. 54540-6180
