Walraven C. M. Melchers assisted in an attempt to save Philip Klumb, Soren Torgerson, and Andrew Hanson from drowning, Dykesville, Wisconsin, November 24, 1912. Melchers, 34, clergyman, assisted DeBaker in handling the boat during the attempts to reach the wreck. He was very tired after the third attempt, but when Klumb drifted toward shore, he made his way in the water 300 feet, some of the waves going over him, and met Klumb. Klumb was so nearly dead that he could not speak. Melchers grasped his arm and guided him. DeBaker and other men drove 200 feet from shore in a wagon, as far as the horses could go and stand in the water. DeBaker and another man then waded 30 feet and helped Melchers and Klumb to the wagon. Melchers was so tired that he could scarcely walk. (See case of GEORGE DEBAKER.) 9656-1031
