Wade W. Lawrence, 49, physician, saved Walter Turner, 36, public service director, from suffocation, Cambridge, Ohio, October 4, 1928. Turner was overcome by sewer gas in a pit 20 feet deep, in which stagnant sewage was several inches deep. Although he knew that Turner and two other men had been overcome, Lawrence, who was tied to a rope, entered a small trap door above the pit and descended a ladder in darkness to him. He tied a rope around Turner, and, as men at the top were pulling Turner to the top, Lawrence felt the effects of the gas and climbed out behind him. Turner was unconscious but recovered. 28741-2306
