W. Ross King 17, clerk, saved Henry W. Beuschel, 17, from drowning, Kane, Illinois, May 23, 1912. Henry was swimming in Macoupin Creek when he became distressed 15 feet from the bank where the water was over six feet deep. Ross, whose right hand and lower forearm had been amputated, ran to the bank and sprang into the water, his momentum carrying him to Henry. Ross grasped Henry’s hair, and when he raised Henry’s head above the surface, Henry grabbed his shoulders. Both went beneath the surface, and although Ross tried to free himself, he could not. His struggles brought him near the bank, and a young man grasped Ross’s fingers and slowly pulled him to the bank and assisted Henry out of the water. 8765-771
