W. John Morrison, 29, machinist, attempted to save Edward Gabanna, 35, motorcycle racer, from being killed by a motorcycle, Lawrence Park, Pennsylvania, August 26, 1921. Gabanna, while taking part in a motorcycle race, crashed into a fence, as he was going at a speed of 45 m.p.h., and was thrown onto the track in the path of approaching racers. Morrison, who was outside the fence and opposite Gabanna, ran over the track about 18 feet to Gabanna and had stooped to grasp him when shouts of other spectators warned him of an oncoming racer, whom Morrison then saw coming directly toward him and only 40 feet away. Morrison sprang backward, and the racer rode between Gabanna and Morrison, but Morrison was struck by the pedal of the motorcycle and thrown to the track. Gabana and Morrison were then dragged off the track by other persons. Gabanna sustained fatal injuries, and Morrison was disabled about 24 weeks with a fractured leg.
