Vivian Johnson rescued Elma I. Hurley from burning, Elliott, Maryland, April 10, 1995. Ms. Hurley, 90, was in her two-story house after fire broke out in the kitchen. Ms. Johnson, 51, a senior citizens’ bus driver who had arrived to pick up Ms. Hurley, discovered the fire. Ms. Johnson kicked open the front door and entered the house, calling out to Ms. Hurley, who responded from another room, which was adjacent to the burning kitchen. Ms. Johnson opened a door to that room, meeting dense smoke which extended to the floor. Ms. Johnson crawled into the room, where she felt Ms. Hurley. She pulled Ms. Hurley to the floor, then grasped her by the arms and, retracing her steps, dragged her out of the house. Ms. Hurley was hospitalized for treatment of burns but died of complications 18 days later. Ms. Johnson recovered from having inhaled smoke.
