Virgil Gilbert Overby, 13, schoolboy, saved Roy T. Whiteman, 8, from drowning, Waco, Texas, June 30, 1916. While wading in the Bosque River, Roy slipped and was carried by the current into a hole, where the water was 15 feet deep. Gilbert swam 30 feet from the bank to Roy, and Roy grasped him, and they went under the surface. Gilbert broke Roy’s hold, grasped him by his waist, and returned to the surface. Gilbert then swam 20 feet with Roy to a tree, which extended into the river from the bank. A woman took Roy, who was semiconscious, to the bank, and Gilbert swam to the bank. 16668-1481
