Verna Mae Gallinger attempted to save Lucille M. Prue from drowning, Peshtigo, Wisconsin, June 14, 1924. While wading in Trout Creek, Lucille, 13, stepped into deep water 35 feet from the bank and was carried by her struggles a few feet farther from the bank. Mae, 13, schoolgirl, waded and swam to Lucille, caught hold of her hair, and tried to swim toward the bank with her. Lucille grabbed Mae and began to climb upon her, and both sank momentarily. After making futile efforts to free herself, Mae sank. Lucille also sank. A little later a man rescued them. Both were then unconscious but were revived.
