Vern D. Fraser saved Winsor M. Hemmie from drowning, Augusta, Iowa, July 20, 1944. While wading in the Skunk River, Winsor, 9, stepped off a bar into water beyond his depth. Struggling wildly, he drifted to water 11 feet deep 35 feet from the bank. Vern, 10, schoolboy, who was smaller than Winsor, removed his clothing, jumped from a steep bank into water six feet deep, and swam to Winsor, whose hair and bands only were at the surface. Holding Winsor by the hair, Vern swam to the bank and with difficulty pulled him partly out of the water. Another boy helped him drag Winsor to the top of the bank. Winsor was unconscious but was revived. 40255-3397
