Valentine F. Frederick, 24, iceman, died attempting to save Herman C. Winterhalder, 43, iceman, from drowning, Meriden, Connecticut, February 28, 1913. Frederick and Winterhalder were fishing through the ice on Beaver Lake when the ice broke and Winterhalder fell into water seven feet deep 80 feet from the bank. He went beneath the surface, but came up and clung to the ice. Frederick, who could not swim and knew the ice was rotten, approached the hole with a rope, but, when he was six feet from Winterhalder, he broke through the ice and was drowned. Winterhalder was later saved by means of a boat. 10241-802
