Timothy Lackey rescued Austin C. Marler from burning, Mauriceville, Texas, November 28, 1995. Austin, 1, was in his crib in a bedroom of a mobile home after fire broke out in that room. A neighbor, Lackey, 22, dishwasher, saw smoke issuing from the mobile home and responded to the scene. Having learned that children were still inside, Lackey entered the mobile home through its back door and proceeded through smoke to Austin’s bedroom. He entered the burning room and, in blistering heat, located Austin. Lackey removed Austin from his crib, then went to his hands and knees and crawled back to the bedroom door, which had shut while he was in the room. Lackey opened the door, then crawled from the bedroom and exited the mobile home. Austin’s brother, who also had been in the bedroom, died in the fire. Austin was hospitalized for treatment of severe burns and smoke inhalation, and he died the next day. Lackey required hospital treatment for second- degree burns to his hands, ears, neck, and knee, and he recovered in two months.
