Timothy A. Maloney helped to save Angie Andujar from burning, Arlington, Texas, June 28, 1990. Dazed, Mrs. Andujar, 36, was in the driver’s seat of a pickup truck that caught fire following a two-vehicle accident. The other vehicle, also a pickup, lay on its side, aflame, a short distance away. Maloney, 27, warehouse worker, drove upon the scene and approached Mrs. Andujar’s pickup. At first unable to open its driver’s door, he returned to his vehicle for a blanket which he then draped across the pickup’s broken windshield to protect Mrs. Andujar from the flames on both the hood of her vehicle and the other pickup. Another man joined Maloney, and, despite the growing flames and intense heat, they removed Mrs. Andujar through the driver’s door of her truck and carried her to safety shortly before both trucks were engulfed in flame. Mrs. Andujar required extensive hospitalization for severe injuries. Maloney received a slight burn to his shoulder, and he recovered.
