Tiburcio Vazquez died after attempting to save a boy from drowning, Freeport, Texas, August 30, 1997. Swimming in the Gulf of Mexico, an 8-year-old boy called for help after entering water beyond his depth. Wading nearby, Vazquez, 33, welder, swam out to him and grasped him. Vazquez then experienced difficulty in the water; he and the boy became separated, and Vazquez lost consciousness. When others at the scene rescued the boy, Vazquez was found floating face down. He was removed to the beach, where resuscitation was attempted. He could not be revived, and he died in the hospital of drowning several hours later. The boy was not injured.
