Thomas S. Fredrickson saved Alberto A. Lara from drowning, Algonquin, Illinois, February 2, 1997. Alberto, 5, fell into the Fox River and was pulled downstream by a swift current. He lost consciousness quickly in the cold water. Fishing from the opposite bank, Fredrickson, 31, salesman, had seen Alberto fall, and he immediately ran along the river to a point down- stream from Alberto. Fredrickson then waded into the river but lost his footing and was carried downstream himself. He swam against the current toward Alberto and, regaining his footing, positioned himself in chest-deep water as Alberto approached. Fredrickson grasped Alberto and continued to wade to the opposite bank, carrying him. Alberto revived and was hospital- ized overnight. He recovered. Fredrickson was examined at the hospital, and he recovered from exposure to cold water.
