Thomas L. Gooley, 33, locomotive engineer, attempted to save Adam J. Gibson, 42, clay miner, from drowning, New Brighton, Pennsylvania, February 11, 1911. Gooley stopped his locomotive, ran to the Beaver River, and swam 45 feet toward Gibson, who had fallen into the stream. He was attacked by cramps and was compelled to return to the bank. Two men made an effort to prevent him from again entering the water, but he broke away and swam toward Gibson. After swimming 25 feet, he was attacked by cramps a second time and returned to the bank. Gooley made a third attempt and swam to a boat, which had approached, and aided the man in the boat in getting Gibson to the bank. Efforts to revive Gibson were unavailing. Gooley suffered from his exposure and was disabled seven days. 6294-605
