Thomas Keith McKenna died attempting to save John H. Stewart from drowning, Ouray, Utah, May 18, 1937. Stewart, 69, rancher, and McKenna, 25, ranch hand, entered a heaviIy-laden rowboat on the Green River, and McKenna, who was rowing, lost control of the boat in a current of 4 to 5 m.p.h. While McKenna, who was a good swimmer, tried to regain control, the boat drifted 500 feet to a point 225 feet from the bank into water 25 feet deep. It then sank. McKenna with one hand took hold of Stewart and drifted and swam at least 12 feet at an angle toward the bank, both being submerged briefly three times and then rising three feet apart. Both then made weak movements with their arms, sank, and were drowned.
