Thomas J. Kille died attempting to save Jacqueline A. and James J. Berning, Jr., from being struck by an automobile, Walbridge, Ohio, September 1, 1967. Jacqueline, 15, and James, 14, were standing on the grass-covered medial strip of a divided highway alongside two automobiles which had been involved in a minor collision. Kille, 42, machine operator, and another man stopped to offer assistance. While the other man directed traffic around the two automobiles, Kille moved onto the medial strip. He was near the open door of the rear vehicle when an automobile approaching in the same lane as the wrecked vehicles ignored the signals of the man directing traffic. As the oncoming automobile swerved onto the medial strip, the man shouted a warning. Kille, with his arms outstretched, lunged forward, grasped Jacqueline and James, and shoved them aside. The oncoming automobile struck Kille, knocked him to the ground, and ran over him. Continuing forward, the vehicle struck Jacqueline and James, who had almost cleared its path. They sustained minor injuries from which they recovered. Kille was pronounced dead at the scene. 50036-5461
