Thomas Hughes, 15, schoolboy, died saving J. Vernon Albrecht, 13, from drowning, Monessen, Pennsylvania, June 7, 1915. Vernon, a poor swimmer, became distressed in deep water 25 feet from the bank of the Monongahela River and called for help. He grasped a boy who went to his aid, and the boy freed himself and swam away. Thomas jumped into the water from a boat at the bank and swam to Vernon. Vernon grasped Thomas around the waist with both arms, and Thomas swam toward the boat. A boy in the boat was starting to take it to the rescue. When he got it 10 feet from the boys in the water, they were separated about five feet. The boy in the boat took Vernon on board and turned to get Thomas, but Thomas had disappeared and was drowned. 14854-1191
