Thomas H. Griffin, 34, farmer, saved Buck Williams, 22, farmhand, from suffocation, Moody, Texas, September 1, 1908. Williams and a young brother of Griffin were overcome by carbon dioxide at the bottom of a well 48 feet deep. After others had refused to descend to get them, and despite warnings of the owner of the well, Griffin hooked a rope around his leg and had himself lowered. When he reached the bottom, he hooked the rope around Williams, and those above raised him. When the rope was again lowered, Griffin hooked it around his brother and remained at the bottom until the rope was again lowered. He was hoisted with the rope around his leg as it had been before. The two young men were revived in about 90 minutes. 9334-795
