Thomas E. Machel saved Larry L. and Janet M. Fahnestock and their son Larry L., Jr., from burning, Fayetteville, Pennsylvania, May 14, 1983. Fahnestock, 38, his wife, 36, and their son, 14, were asleep in their mobile home when fire broke out at night. A neighbor, Machel, 42, truck driver, kicked in the front door, awakening the family, and led them to safety out the back door. Learning that the Fahnestocks’ daughter was still inside, Machel re-entered the back door but was forced out by worsening conditions. He then broke the daughter’s bedroom window, crawled inside, and searched for her, but she had fled the mobile home. Machel escaped; he recovered from minor burns.
