Thomas E. Lund, Sr., saved Larry M. Allen from being struck by a racing car, Bellevue, Nebraska, July 15, 1951. Larry, 10, and Lund, 39, steel company foreman, were among spectators at an automobile race track and were standing 15 feet beyond the guard-rail when a racing car went out of control and headed directly toward them at high speed. Others near by ran to safety. Lund moved 10 feet farther from the rail, expecting Larry to follow; but the latter remained motionless in the path of the car. Returning quickly to Larry, Lund took hold of the boy when the car was 20 feet away and attempted to hurl him to safety. As Lund released Larry, the car crashed into the rail and demolished it. A section of railing struck Lund, and he dropped unconscious to the ground. Larry landed four feet from Lund, escaping serious injury. The car halted just after penetrating the rail. Lund sustained fractures of both legs and was hospitalized two months. 42365-3759
