Thomas E. Greer helped to save Katherine T. Reid from burning, Memphis, Tennessee, February 6, 1996. Ms. Reid, 84, was inside her one-story house after fire erupted in the den. Flames spread, sending smoke throughout the house, including the dining room, where Ms. Reid lay, unconscious. Greer, 27, tree trimmer, was passing through the neighborhood when he saw smoke and flames issuing from the house. He broke the glass in a dining room window, then, after removing its security bars, climbed through the window. Unable to see in the dense smoke, Greer crawled around the dining room table, until he brushed against Ms. Reid. He established a hold on her, then dragged her to the window. With difficulty, Greer maneuvered Ms. Reid part way out of the window. Others who had arrived helped remove her from the house. Greer, uninjured, climbed outside to safety. Ms. Reid required prolonged hospitalization for severe smoke inhalation, and she recovered.
