Thomas C. McDuffie, 35, annealer, died attempting to save Rosalie Carey, aged fifteen, from drowning, Ansonia, Connecticut, July 1, 1944. While wading in a pond, Miss Carey got beyond her depth and floundered in water 10 feet deep 25 feet from the bank. McDuffie, who was a poor swimmer and fully clothed, waded from the bank and swam five feet to Miss Carey and took hold of her. She threw her arms around his neck; and after a prolonged struggle, they were drowned. 40275-3381
